Our Heritage Birds

Black Australorps

This heritage breed has a rich history. Descending from ancient breeds such as the Langshan and Minorca, the Black Australorp quickly gained popularity in the early 1900's. Between 1900 and 1924 the Black Australorp repeatedly excelled in egg laying ability, laying 347, 354, and 364 eggs in different year-long egg laying competitions. They were accepted into the American Poultry Association in 1929. These sweet birds are calm and docile, incredible foragers, good egg layers and place in the top 5 dual purpose birds for meat quality.

Chicks: $6    Juveniles (4-12wks) $12     Pullets: $20     Layer: $25

Delawares

This incredible heritage breed was created from combining the incredible eating quality of the New Hampshire with the egg laying capacity of the Barred Rock. The Delaware was the originally bred for the broiler industry until being replaced by the engineered cornish cross. These beautiful birds were accepted by the American Poultry Association in 1952. Today the Delaware is a versatile, hardy breed leading the pack in dual-purpose utility, providing large to extra large eggs and delicious meat more similar to what we have grown accustomed to than other heritage chicken breeds.

This is a new addition to our establishment and will be availabele 2027

Heritage Turkeys

Unlike todays industrial turkeys, heritage turkeys are sustainable in that they can reproduce naturally, are long lived, are excellent foragers, are versatile and hardy. Heritage turkeys are slower growing, they reach sexual maturity between 5-8 months old with mature hens averaging 10-16lbs and toms averaging 22-30lbs.  Our line includes Blue Slate, Bourbon Red, Standard Bronze, and Black Spanish, all of which are recognized by the American Poultry Association as Rare Heritage Breeds. Heritage Turkeys provide both large eggs and delicious, flavorful meat that far exceeds the nutritional value of industrial turkeys.

Poults:  $15    Juveniles (4wks+): $25    Adult (16wks+): $60

Guinea Fowl

Guineas are considered wild game fowl and are far less domesticated than other backyard poultry. Guineas are highly social and can sometimes display monogamy even in captivity. They prefer to be ground dwellers, foraging for seeds, insects, and larvae, but are very strong flyers. Guineas are a multi-purpose species kept for pest control, meat, and eggs. They reach sexual maturity between 6-9months, lay uniquely shaped eggs that are significantly high in protein, average 3-5lbs, and can live 10-15 years. Guineas are a unique addition and an excellent source of entertainment in addition to their meat, eggs, and pest control.

Keets: $7     Juveniles (4wks+): $12     Adult (16wks+): $20

Cayuga Ducks

Cayugas are an American Breed descended from the Mallard and originated in New York in approximately 1840. The Cayuga is recognized as one of the hardiest of domestic ducks and can tolerate even the harshest New England winters. Cayuga ducks were the primary production breed before being replaced by the white feathered Pekin. They are a medium sized duck, averaging 7-8lbs full grown, but can grow quickly, sometimes ready for harvest as early as 12 weeks. Cayugas are an excellent multi-purpose breed laying up to 150 large eggs, great foragers, highly self-sufficient breed with a docile temperament known to make good pets when hand-raised.

Ducklings: $10    Juveniles (4wks+): $15    Adult(16wks+): $20
